  10.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the attitude of HIV(+) Workers facing Personnel
  11.        reduction as economical rehabilitation measure in a large business of
  12.        Kinshasa, in a crisis period. METHODS: To probe 1,383 employee records
  13.        in the largest commercial bank of Kinshasa, where a general screening
  14.        was performed yearly, with HIV test and seronotification, from 1988 to
  15.        1991. To count the dismissions operated in the bank consecutively to
  16.        grave disturbances (Lootings). To determine the HIV(+) rate among the
  17.        laid-off employees, their attitude facing that issue, in comparison of
  18.        HIV seroprevalence and seroincidence among all the workers. RESULTS: a)
  19.        Relative stabilization of the HIV infection: seroprevalence = 5.8%,
  20.        seroincidence < 1% (0.6%), b) Important Personnel reduction since
  21.        october 1993: 1,320 to 1,070 workers = 250 (-19%) c) Vehement
  22.        protestation and menaces of Law actions by all the laid-off HIV(+)
  23.        workers, d) Number of HIV(+) workers dismissed: 16/250 = 6.4%. Compared
  24.        to HIV seroprevalence and seroincidence: 5.8% x 250 = 14.5 (15), e)
  25.        Annual average indexes between HIV(+) and HIV(-) workers in the bank
  26.        clinic: Consultation days: 23/18. Sickness non attendance: 3/0.4
  27.        Hospitalization days: 1/0.2. Expenses tied to Treatment (USD): 419/254.
  28.        DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: HIV(+) workers consider Personnel reduction
  29.        as a discrimination for them. Truly the medical secret has never been
  30.        divulgated to the Employer: a lot of other objective elements are
  31.        considered and lead at that issue.
